Goncharova back in the driver's seat

Nataliya Gonchorova is currently the top scorer in World Grand Prix Group 1

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 23, 2016 - As the leading points hitter in 2013 and 2015, Nataliya Goncharova is no stranger to the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix's Group 1 best scorer statistics. And heading into week three of this year's competition, Goncharova is again ahead. Currently at 120 points, her total stands six points above Polen Uslupehlivan's for Turkey and eight above Lonneke Slöetjes' of the Netherlands, who was the top scorer after week one.

Gonchorova began last weekend by scoring 18 points against the Dutch in Russia's straight sets victory 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 28-26). She went on to collect 23 points in her team's win against Thailand before scoring 24 in their victory against Italy, putting her total at 65 for the three matches.

World Grand Prix Group 1 statistics

Russia were clear winners of Pool F1 and currently sit second in the Group 1 ranking, just one of two teams with China to win their six matches so far. On Friday, Russia begin their week three Pool I1 tournament in Kyoto, Japan against Serbia. They play Thailand on the following day before taking on hosts Japan on Sunday.

Goncharova still has a little way to go, however, before equalling the top scorers in Groups 2 and 3 where Berenika Tomsia of Poland (Group 2) and Angela Leyva (Group 3) claimed honours with 167 and 203 points respectively.
