China in must-win situation against USA

 

Bangkok, Thailand, July 7, 2016 - USA and China meet in the last Pool K1 match at the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix 2016 Group 1 finals in Thailand. The Americans have already secured their participation in Saturday's semifinals, while China need a win from this game in order to qualify.

Head-to-Head
• United States and China have met 35 times at the World Grand Prix. For United States, China are the most common opponents at the World Grand Prix. China have only met Brazil more often (36).
• United States won 14 of these matches and lost 21. They have not lost more against any other opponent at the World Grand Prix.
• China have won only more matches against Japan (23) than against United States (21) at the World Grand Prix.
• They already met twice at the 2016 World Grand Prix. On 12 June, China won 3-1 while United States won in straight sets on 26 June.

United States
• United States beat Netherlands on Wednesday (3-0) and are now on a seven-match winning streak, losing only two sets in this run.
• Their last longer winning streak in the competition came between 2014-2015 when they managed 10 wins in a row.
• Since the start of the 2015 World Grand Prix, United States have lost only two of their 24 matches. Both of these defeats came against China, once in 2015 and once in 2016.
• Kimberley Hill is on a team-high 97 points at the 2016 World Grand Prix. She also has scored a team-high 10 aces.

China
• China lost its first match of the Final Round 3-2 to Netherlands. 
• China also lost its last match of the Group Round, meaning they have now recorded consecutive World Grand Prix defeats for the first time since 2014 when they lost to Brazil and Japan in the Final Round. 
• They have not lost three consecutive World Grand Prix matches since 2012, when they were beaten by Brazil, Thailand, Turkey and forthcoming opponent United States. 
• Last year China missed out on a medal, finishing in fourth place. 
• Xiangyu Gong scored a team-high 21 points for China in their match against Netherlands. She attempted 48 spikes, scoring 15 points from them.
