Peru look to extend successful WGP stretch against Cuba

 

Chiclayo, Peru, June 11, 2016 - Peru are on a three-game winning streak against Cuba in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix, but it was the Caribbean team that won their last encounter at the 2015 World Cup. Still, the home court advantage in their Saturday's game in Chiclayo may tilt the balance in favour of Peru.

Head-to-Head
• Peru and Cuba have met five times at the World Grand Prix with Peru winning three and Cuba two.
• Their last encounter came last year when Peru won in straight sets. 
• Peru won their last three matches against Cuba including a 3-2 win in 2014. This is the only World Grand Prix match between these teams in which they played more than three sets: both teams won twice in straight sets.
• Their last meeting came at the 2015 World Cup with Cuba winning 3-1. 

Peru
• Peru recorded a fourth successive win in the competition with a 3-0 win against Algeria on Friday.
• Peru and Croatia are the only teams in Group 3 without defeat at the 2016 World Grand Prix.
• Peru's four-match winning streak is their longest ever in the competition.
• Only once did Peru win more than three matches at a single World Grand Prix edition: in 2015 (6).
• Angela Leyva (90) has scored most point of all players in Group 3. She scored 71 spikes (Group 3 tournament high), 14 blocks (Group 3 tournament high) and five aces
• Vanessa Palacios is currently the second-best receiver in the competition with an efficiency of 46.30%. Only Croatia's Mira Topic has a better rate (49.43%).

Cuba
• Cuba have lost two and won two matches at this year's World Grand Prix. Both defeats came against Croatia.
• Cuba can win at least three matches at consecutive World Grand Prix editions for the first time since 2004-2008. Last year, they won three of their six matches
• Sulian Caridad Matienzo Linares has scored 45 points which makes her Cuba's top scorer at this tournament.
• Daimara Lescay Cajigal is currently the second-best blocker in Group 3 of the competition with 12 stuff blocks and an average per set of 0.86. Only Peru's Leyva (14 blocks, 1.08 average) performed better.
