Peru break new ground with win over Algeria

Maguilaura Frias attacks for Peru

Chiclayo, Peru, June 10, 2016 - Peru have won four matches in a row for the first time in the history of the World Grand Prix, beating Algeria 3-0 (25-9, 25-9, 25-11) after just 56 minutes in Chiclayo on Friday.

Angela Leyva again led the way for Peru, scoring a game-high 20 points, with 13 coming from spikes, four from blocks and three from service, in another complete performance for the Peruvian ace.

Peru raced out to an 8-3 lead ahead of the first technical timeout and after a killer block from Mirtha Uribe, they led Algeria 13-5. They continued to dominate from there, taking the first set 25-9 after 18 minutes.

Having failed to win a set in their first three matches at this year's World Grand Prix, Algeria started the second set the better and led 1-0. Leyva wasn't in much of a mood to concede though and helped Peru again take control, before winning the second set with identical stats to the first; 25-9 after 18 minutes.

Carla Rueda was also in fine form and as well as Uribe she scored 10 points for the match as Peru once more gained ascendancy early in a set. Taking a commanding lead in the third, it was fitting for Leyva to seal it with an ace, giving Peru a 25-11 win in the third to take the match 3-0 after just 56 minutes.

Yasmine Abderrahim continued to top Algeria's scoring with five and now has a team-high 40 points for the tournament, further emphasising that the 17-year-old has a bright future in the sport.
