Montano and Colombia secure ticket to Group 3 finals

Colombia celebrates the victory and the qualification to the Final Four.

Cali, Colombia, June, 12, 2016 - Colombia have qualified for the Group 3 finals of the FIVB World Grand Prix 2016, beating Kazakhstan 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-12) in Cali, Colombia, on Sunday, with Madelaynne Montano scoring a game-high 17 points.

The loss ends Kazakhstan’s best World Grand Prix winning streak of four matches, but they were already confirmed to play at the Group 3 finals in Almaty next weekend as they are hosting the event.
Colombia had an erratic start to the match, but Amanda Coneo quickly helped her team recover. The game was a balanced affair, especially with Ilina Evgeniia's contributions for Kazakhstan. But the home team proved too strong and took the set by 25-21.

Kenny Moreno and Madelaynne Montano were scoring well and to Colombia pushed to a 16-8 lead at the second technical timeout. Staring down a 2-0 deficit, Katerina Tatko and Kristina Anikonova led Kazakhstan on a marvellous recovery and stunned Colombia to level the match 1-1 with a 25-22 second-set victory.

Colombia setter María Alejandra Marin recognised the form of spectacular opposite hitter Montano, whose astonishing spikes stirred the Colombian fans into a frenzy. Tatko continued fighting for Kazakhstan, with support from Lyudmila Issayeva, but Colombia had learned their lesson from the second set and with another superb Montano spike, they took the third set 25-19.

Again it was Montano, Coneo and Moreno leading the way for Colombia and they pushed to a 21-9 lead. Montano extended her team-best points tally to 87 for the tournament as Colombia took the fourth set 25-12 and the match 3-1.
