Jerkov praises team control in 3-1 win over Cuba

Croatian captain Mia Jerkov was inspirational against Cuba

Bendigo, Victoria, June 3, 2016 - Croatian captain Mia Jerkov praised her team for keeping control during the match, while Cuban coach Roberto Garcia said his team struggled in reception all night.

Croatia coach Miroslav Aksentijevic: “It was our first match of the competition, and so very important for us. We are very aware of Cuba’s history, so this game was very hard for us. She (Jerkov) is a very experienced player, as is Mira Topic. They were very important for us tonight.”

Cuba coach Roberto Garcia: “We were very bad in reception and we did not do well with our service. This is a new team. Today is a young team. Tomorrow we need to win, and then win again on Sunday. We need to win two games this weekend.”

Croatia captain Mia Jerkov: “We knew how physically strong they are, and we tried to prepare accordingly. I think we did a very good job of staying patient. Keeping control is part of managing the game. We didn’t like the way we played the second set, but we turned the game around.”

Cuba captain Linares Matienzo: “It was out first match this year together. We hope that we can do better tomorrow.”
