Team profile

Puerto Rico are making their seventh appearance at the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix as they look to improve on their fourth place in Group 2 last year. They will also participate in their first Olympic volleyball tournament after hosting and finishing ahead of Colombia, Kenya and Algeria at the Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament in San Juan.

Puerto Rico took 16th place overall in the 2015 edition of the World Grand Prix and in the five outings before that they came 10th in 2009, 11th in 2010, 13th in 2012, 18th in 2013 and 15th in 2014.

Puerto Rico have appeared at World Championships four times since 2002. They made their best finish of joint 10th in that year. At the 2014 edition in Italy, the Central American side won one match, against Cuba, as they missed out on second round qualification by three points. They have enjoyed better results in continental competitions finishing third at the 2009 and 2014 Pan American Cups. They also finished fifth at the 2011 Pan American Games in Mexico and fourth in the 2015 edition in Toronto, Canada. They took the silver medal at the 2009 NORCECA Championships, came fourth in 2011 and claimed bronze at the last two editions.
