Overview

Team profile

Australia made a promising start in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix when they finished fourth in the Group 3 Final Four hosted in Canberra in 2015. They will host a week in the city of Bendigo this year before travelling to Colombia for the second round, hoping to qualify for the Final Four in Kazakhstan.

The team have competed in the Asian Championships for 40 years and the fourth-place finishes achieved in 1975 and 1979 remain their highest in the competition. Their most recent result was a ninth-place finish in 2015.

The Volleyroos did not qualify for the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championship in Italy, but the team have taken part in the tournament twice, coming 12th in 1982 and equal 21st in 2002.

They received welcome exposure when they competed at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, finishing equal ninth, but coach Shannon Winzer has her sights on Tokyo 2020 and beyond instead of this year’s tournament in Rio de Janeiro. A wave of retirement from the team's more experienced players means it’s rebuilding time for Australia.
