Villa Dora upset Boca to clinch Argentina's A1 League

Villa Dora won their first A1 League crown

Buenos Aires, Argentina, April 16, 2016 – In a packed Gorki Grana Stadium in the city of Moron, Villa Dora overcame defending champions Boca 3-2 (18-25, 27-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-8) to win the Argentine Women's A1 League title for the first time.

Boca previously led the series 2-1 before Villa Dora came back to force the deciding game.

Argentina national team players led the way for both teams, which should bode well for the upcoming FIVB World Grand Prix where Argentina host Bulgaria, the Dominican Republic and Kenya in Tucuman from June 3 to 5 before travelling to Wloclawek in Poland to play the hosts, Kenya and Puerto Rico from June 10 to 12.

Marcia Scacchi and Micaela Fabiana shone for the champions and Mariángeles Cossar impressed for Boca in the five-set match.

Boca spiked well from the start of the match and cruised through the first set with Cossar and Daniela Bulaich leading the way.

Boca led early in the second set and were three points ahead at the first technical timeout before Villa Dora levelled at 8-8. The Santa Fe team led by two at 17-15 but Boca fought back in a tight set. However, they couldn’t convert setpoint at 24-23, which would have put them 2-0 up, and Villa Dora levelled at 1-1.

Boca dug in again to go ahead 2-1 before another fightback by their opponents, who hadn’t lost all season.

Villa Dora stormed through the tiebreak set 15-8 to become champions for the first time.
