Tomsia steers Poland on winning track with 23 points scored

Zielona Góra, Poland, June 3, 2016 - Berenika Tomsia played the crucial role in Poland's victory over Canada 3-1 (25-19, 28-30, 25-15, 25-20) as she scored 23 points.

Poland’s Berenika Tomsia impressed the home crowd with 23 points scored with superior spiking (19) and blocking (4) skills. The result was a birthday present for Malwina Smarzek one of the youngest players in coach Janek Nawrocki’s roster.







Canada had a better start in the game and had little problems with establishing a three point lead by the first technical time-out. The Poles, however, quickly recovered and leveled the score at 12-all. Anna Grejman’s great serving (four service aces!) kept Poland in the game and brought opportunity to turn the tables later in the set, winning 25-19.

Set two had a similar story: better start for Canada and close balanced game later on. Poland’s Berenika Tomsia kept on leading the scoring charts (15) not only in spiking (12), but also in block (3). The end of the set was different though, and too many lost opportunities caused Poland to lose 28-30 to the persistent Canadians.






The nervous ending of the previous set did not drain Polish players. On the contrary, they started with enough energy and focus to quickly establish an 8-1 lead at the first technical time-out. They kept riding that wave and did not let go, fighting for every ball despite having a wide margin of points. This attitude payed off, and the first set-ball came to Poland as early as 24-14. Moments later Malwina Smarzek smashed through Canadian block for a 25-15 and 2-1 lead in the match.
